On February 26, 1995, Bryan and David Freeman and their cousin Ben Birdwell killed
Bryan and David’s parents, Brenda and Dennis, and their younger brother Erik at
the family home in Salisbury Township, Pennsylvania.

The brothers had embraced neo-Nazi beliefs for years and even tattooed slogans on
their foreheads. They received life sentences without parole, though they were not
convicted of Erik’s murder. Their sentences were upheld in 2014 despite a Supreme
Court ruling on juvenile life sentences. In February 2024, they were re sentenced
to 60 years to life and may become eligible for parole in 2055.

The Freemans were a religious family who raised their three sons as Jehovah’s Witnesses,
but Bryan and David rejected that way of life and turned to neo-Nazism. Brenda’s
friends said she feared her sons. She tried to help by seeking advice and enrolling
them in educational programs, but these efforts failed. Bryan struggled with mental
health problems, and David had spent time in juvenile facilities for substance abuse.

Between 1993 and 1995, police visited the Freeman home several times because Bryan
had threatened his parents. A few days before the killings, he was suspended from
school for drawing racist pictures.

On the day of the murders, Bryan, David, and Ben came home from a movie. An argument
started when Brenda objected to Ben being there. Bryan stabbed Brenda with a kitchen
knife, while David and Ben went upstairs and killed Dennis with a metal bar and
baseball bat. The three then attacked and killed young Erik before escaping in Brenda’s
car.

The next day, Dennis’s sister discovered the bodies. The coroner said the killings
were extremely brutal. The brothers and Ben were later arrested in Michigan after
they fled across America, with police from 3 different states in hot pursuit. To
avoid the death penalty, Bryan admitted to killing Brenda, and David confessed to
killing Dennis. DNA evidence helped convict Ben of Dennis’s murder, but no one was
charged for Erik’s death. All three received life sentences without parole.

True crime author Fred Rosen’s book _Blood Crimes_ explores the Freeman family murders,
the brothers, and their family history.

The case was also featured in the 2014 documentary series _Killer Kids_ and in a
2022 episode of Oxygen’s _Killer Siblings_ titled “Freemans.”
