THE DUMMY DOWN OF THE RANK AND FILE

Posted on July 28, 2026 by RR

Talking to Jehovah’s Witnesses these days can be very frustrating—it often feels like I’m talking to a brick wall. It seems like many Witnesses have this laid-back attitude that makes real discussions tough. Even with all the changes coming from the Governing Body, most people just carry on as if those changes don’t matter. When they’re out doing cart witnessing, they often seem more interested in handing out literature and JW.org business cards than actually having a meaningful conversation.

For a lot of folks, being part of the organization feels nice and comfy, which makes me wonder how deeply they’re really connecting with their faith. Many seem to skim over the questionable parts of their beliefs without feeling the need to dig deeper. With all the simplified videos and books out there, it seems like the push for a deeper understanding isn’t really there. This reliance on easily digestible material can stifle critical thinking and stop people from really exploring core principles. Too often, the publications twist Bible verses to fit new teachings, and when I try to bring this up, I usually get the same old responses without any real thought. They’re spoon-fed by the governing body, and they’re told, “don’t chew, just swallow.”

These conversations happen way too often, showing a pattern where logical errors, inconsistencies in beliefs, or flaws in their story telling, just get ignored. When I point out these issues, it feels like there’s a big sense of indifference. Even when people notice inaccuracies or uncomfortable truths, many choose to overlook them, valuing relationships more than seeking the truth.

This kind of setup makes complicated stuff seem simpler and easier to understand. But when you start to question what’s normal, it can feel more like you’re going against the grain instead of just trying to grow as a person.

For many Jehovah’s Witnesses, this religion serves as an identity and a social club setting, rather than something they actually study deeply. If the Governing Body were to announce that a real fiery hell exists, it wouldn’t surprise me if most Witnesses readily accepted it, despite the fact that they had not believed it just a week before. Just look at the blood issue. You can now transfuse your own blood, when that wasn’t the case before. And when you discuss this with witnesses, they deny it, “that’s always been the case” they say.

When I was a Witness, as you can see behind me, I bought all kinds of translations, commentaries, interlinears, and dictionaries. My Bible had notes all throughout the margins. My Watchtower publications all had notes and comments.

Apparently, things have changed, because no one does that anymore.

The older generation is so confused, wondering why the new system isn’t here; they don’t understand the changes in the religion. It’s becoming softer and more mainstream. It feels like they’re just going through the motions because they don’t know what else to do. Their interest in deeper study has faded since the religion itself doesn’t promote that anymore, and being deep in study almost seems discouraged.

The younger generation weren’t raised in that deeper study environment, so for many, it’s just a social club now. I’ve met some who don’t even know who Russell or Rutherford were.

Overall, the passion for deep study, zeal for ministry, and willingness to make sacrifices are all fading.

In fact, I recall one time asking a JW, “What would you do if one day you opened up the Watchtower magazine, and there was an article supporting the Trinity, or hell-fire”? He said, “Then it was Jehovah’s time to reveal it.” I just shook my head.

Simple conversations can be frustrating. It leads me to wonder: what happens when an entire community clings to its beliefs, ignoring the truth just for the sake of comfort? I guess this is why it’s so effective. They can hear the worst things or see the lies right before their eyes, but they are so brainwashed that they either don’t see, wanna see or pretend to see nothing.

Sometimes, you just have to give up trying. It’s frustrating, I’ve learned to accept that most of the time, there’s nothing I can do. Some friends and family members are just too set in their ways and won’t change.

I can see how tough it would be for them to face the truth now. I can’t imagine the regret and loss they would feel. It’s like they’re in a zombie state, but that’s their choice, especially with all the info out there that they’ve chosen to ignore. I’ve shared my thoughts with them so many times, but they just don’t care. They’ve been spiritually lobotomized.
